MARTIAL ART STYLES

Aikido                     Martial art developed by Master Morihei Ueshiba means, "Way of Grace and Harmony".

Aikijitsu                   A combat technique that is a forerunner of Aikido

Arnis                       One of the Characteristics of Filipino martial arts is the use of weapons
                                from the very beginning of training.  Arnis uses strikes, locking, and 
                                throwing techniques performed with short rattan staves, knives, short 
                                swords, and empty hand.  " Modern Arnis", a widely popular style, was
                                founded by Remy Presas.

Brazilian Jujitsu       Is a version of Japanese jujitsu that has changed significantly enough to
                              become its own system.  it places great importance on ground fighting.
                              Popularized by the
Gracie family from Brazil.

Capoeira                 was developed around the 1600s by African slaves in Brazil.  It uses 
                              music to aid in training and it emphasizes kicking, take downs, and
                              slipping of oncoming attacks. 

Daitoryu Aikijitsu      Original
school of Jujitsu, forerunner of Aikido, founded by Master Sakaku Tokada.

Goju Ryu                 Hard/Soft system founded bo Chojun Miyagi

Hapkido                  Is a Korean martial art that uses punches, kicks, and throws with joint
                              locks.  It is similar to Aikido as the use of throwing techniques.

Iaijitsu                     Art of drawing the sword

Jeet Kune Do          Karate style founded by
Bruce Lee, Means "Way of the Intercepting Fist".

Judo                       Martial art founded by Jigoro Kano, means “Soft Way “

Jujitsu                     Founded by Tenenuchi Hisamori, unarmed combat techniques based on 
                              principles of nonresistance.

Kami Bushi Kai        Karate style founded by David Okawa Baize in 1981.  Meaning "Divine 
                              Warrior Spirit".

Karatejitsu               Replaced the term "Te" in the early 1900's, means "Empty Hand Technique".
Kendo                   
Martial art meaning "Way of the Sword".  A national sport in Japan, it is 
                              taught in schools where both males and females participate.

Kenjutsu                 
Art of the sword; a forerunner of Kendo

Kenpo                     Developed by Edmund K.Parker "Way of the Fist".  Is a striking art and 
                              uses a large amount of pins and traps, but like all arts, contains throws and
                              joint manipulations as well.

Krav Maga              Is a form of self defense and hand-to-hand combat created in Israel.  It
                              might not be considered a "martial art" in the classical sense, but more of a
                              self defense structure. 

Kung Fu                  Chinese martial art meaning "to master" or "human effort".

Kyokushin Kai          Hard karate style founded by
Master Matsutatsu Oyama, meaning the "Way 
                               of Ultimate Truth", nicknamed "The fighting style".

Kyudo                     Way of the Bow and Arrow

MMA                      Mixed Martial Arts is a sport that uses many martial art disciplines to create a
                              free style form of fighting that adheres to the few rules that govern the sport. 

Muay Thai               Is a Thai art that can be classified as kickboxing.  Boxers are able to use
                              knees, elbows, shins, and feet while fighting.

Ninjitsu                    Is a Japanese style of martial arts in the sense of combat, but also incorporates
                             the tools of an advance scout or spy.  Learn the skills of survival, 
                              concealment, and espionage.

Sambo                    A Russian word meaning "self defense without a weapon," Influenced by 
                              judo as well as Russian wrestling.  Developed for the Russian military.

Shito Ryu                Karate system founded by Kenwa Mabuni.
          
Tae Kwon Do          Founded by General Choi Hong Hi, meaning "Way of Hand and Foot".

Tai Chi Chuan         Shang Sen Feng, Buddhist monk who modified and perfected Bodhidharma's
                              teachings during the Sung Dynasty. Meaning "Supreme Ultimate Fist".

United Bujitsu Federation   Organization that promotes and teaches three styles of karate, 
                                         Kami Bushi Do by
Shihan Dan McCaslin, Kami Bushi Jitsu by Shihan 
                                         Long, and both branch styles are of Kami Bushi Kai.

Wado Ryu               Style of karate founded by Master Hironori Otsuka, meaning 
                               “Peaceful Way ".

Wu Shu                  First art of combat initiated by Bodhidharma, commonly called
                              "Shadow Boxing"


HISTORY

 

 


GOALS & EXPECTATIONS

Shodan -1st Dan
Completion of syllabus and tested competent in all aspects. 
Students grow and mature as individuals in the art after Shodan and they continue that growth after each new Dan level if they maintain the correct mental attitude.

Nidan - 2nd Dan
Completion of syllabus and tested competent in all aspects (in principle 2 years training after achieving Shodan) - minimum age of 16 years.
This grading assesses improvement in the technical aspects of the students development since Shodan.

 Sandan - 3rd Dan
Completion of syllabus and tested competent in all aspects (in principle 3 years training after achieving Nidan). 
At Sandan the student should be at his technical best and be able to teach those technical aspects. Hence the grading requirement to demonstrate intricate kihon drills using both sides of the body equally as well as kata, kobudo and kumite.

Yondan - 4th Dan
Completion of syllabus and tested competent in all aspects (in principle 3 years training after achieving Sandan).
This grading is about technical performance and teaching. At Yondan the student must demonstrate a depth of knowledge that has grown through training/teaching since Sandan.

Godan - 5th Dan and above
Godan and above grades are earned and awarded but are not syllabus tested.
A minimum of 3 years further training/teaching is required in-between grades for Godan and above. Service to karate as well as written articles and research is taken into account for attaining grades of Godan and above.
This model recognizes competent skilled karate-ka and rewards service to the art.

** MUST  display a good attitude and proper discipline.
** MUST  be able to demonstrate adequate self-defense skills.
** MUST  wait a minimum of 4 months to test between ranks - to 1st Kyu (Brown Belt)
               for students 11 years & older.
** MUST  wait a minimum of 4 months to test between ranks - to 1st Kyu (Brown Belt) 
               and Shodan 1st Degree(Black Belt) for students 11 years & under.
** MUST  wait a minimum of 6 months to test between ranks 1st Kyu (Brown Belt)
               and JR. Black Belt or Shodan 1st Degree Black Belt for students 10 years
               & under.
TESTING other factors involved are students attendance and class participation.  
                          The FINAL decision is up to the INSTRUCTORS.
