BACKYARD FUN
Now that summer’s here, it’s time to have fun out in the open. Here are some things you can do right in your backyard – and have tons of fun in the process.
Sensei says. Have you played “Simon says?” You can play the same game, but with a martial arts twist, by calling it “Sensei says.” For instance, if the Sensei says, “Sensei says jump,” the others must jump. If the Sensei “Jump,” without saying “Sensei says” and somebody jumps, then that person is out. It is the Sensei’s task to try to get everyone out as quickly as possible, and it is everyone else’s job to stay “in” for as long as possible. The last of the Sensei’s followers to stay in wins.
Jump rope. Jump rope is part of the curriculum in many Martial Arts programs as it is a great form of exercise. And it is something you can have fun practicing at home. Have a contest. How many jump ropes can you and your friends do in five minutes?
Dancing. Put on some music and dance. Ask your parents and neighbors to join in the fun. Impress everyone by including martial arts moves into your dance routine.
Hopscotch. All you need is chalk, some friends and hopping skills. There are many different variations of the hopscotch diagram that you can draw with chalk, and you can use your favorite version.
Badminton. Fetch the racquets that are gathering dust in the attic. Play doubles if there are four people willing to play.
